SCENARIO:
This is a standard radiographic view of the axis. and its dens. The correct angle must be chosen with the mouth open to avoid overlying shadows of the teeth and jaws. The surfaces of the lateral atlanto-axial joints (5 and 7) do not make bony contact because the hyaline cartilage which covers the bony surfaces is not radio-opaque (this applies to any synovial joint).
